As a Locomotive Engineer, your duty is to operate electric, diesel-electric, or gas-turbine-electric locomotive, interpreting train order, train signals, and railroads rules and regulations, to transport passengers or freight by performing the following duties. Requirements: Requirements Inspects locomotive before each run to verify specified fuel, sand, water, and other supplies. Synchronize watch with that of Railroad Passenger Car Conductor or Railroad Freight Conductor to ensure departure time stations or terminal is in accordance with time schedule. Receives starting signal from Railroad Passenger Car Conductor or Railroad Freight conductor and move controls, such as throttle and airbrakes, to operate locomotive. Ability to interpret train orders, train signals, and railroad’s rules and regulations to operate locomotive, following safety regulations and time schedule. Calls out train signals to Locomotive Conductor clearly for verification of meaning to avoid error, and interpretation. Confers with Locomotive Conductor or Dispatcher via radio to issue or receive information or instruction concerning stops, delays, or oncoming trains. Observes track to detect obstructions. Inspects locomotive after running to detect damaged or defective equipment. Prepare reports to explain accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays. Lubricates moving parts of locomotive. Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirement listed below is representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Must be able to climb and balance well enough to climb ladder and/or cars 100% of time. Must be able to stand and walk 100% of time. Must be able to hear well enough to distinguish warning sounds or verbal instructions above loud noises 100% of time. Must be able to reach with hands and arms and/or use fingers to feel handle 100% of time. Must be able to stoop, bend, kneel, and lift at all times. Hearing Ability- To show that they can hear warning signals and communicate with other employees. Locomotive Engineers must pass a Standard FRA Hearing Test. Visual Ability- Locomotive Engineers must pass a Standard FRA Vision Test. Important Qualities: Hand-eye coordination - Locomotive engineers must be able to operate various controls while staying aware of their surroundings. Leadership skills - On some trains, a conductor directs a crew. Yardmaster oversees other rail yard workers. Mechanical skills - All rail employees work with complex machines. Most have to be able to adjust equipment when it does not work properly. Physical strength - Locomotive engineers have to lift equipment up to 50 pounds. Speaking skills - Locomotive engineers must be able to speak clearly so other railroad employees and sometimes passengers understand what they are saying. Work Environment - While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to loud noise, moving machinery parts, outdoor weather conditions and elements, airborne particles and fumes from gas, oil, and grease. Drug Free - Locomotive Engineers must pass a Standard FRA Drug and Alcohol test and will be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
